Drawn in the group stages with Kilconieron, Carnmore and Ardrahan, Mellows settled quickly in their opening game with Kilconieron and recorded a comfortable victory with Joanne Bluett and Ria Mc Philibin to the fore. Next up was Carnmore and this local derby didn’t disappoint with Mellows coming out on top in a tight game where Mellows and Ria Mc Philibin in particular took their scores when the opportunity arose. At the other end Ciara O Sullivan was having a great day in the Mellows goals making a string of fine saves with Laura Ni Cheallaigh working tirelessly across the back line.
In their final group game Mellows took on Ardrahan needing a win to be sure to qualify from the group. They produced an excellent performance to account for Ardrahan with Abbie Fox Carr, Roisin Hughes and the dynamo that is Niamh Mc Peake very much at the heart of all that was good from Mellows. Mellows had now qualified for Semi Final where they would meet Mullagh. Again Mellows settled quickly with scores from Ellen Burke, Ria Mc Philibin, and Niamh Mc Peake giving them a good start and a nice lead that they maintained throughout.
Ciara Morrissey was getting through loads of ball and Alison Heaney had an excellent game at the back for Mellows and her clearances and neat interchange play with Abbie Fox Carr was a feature. On to the final where they took on Athenry. Again Mellows were out of the blocks quickly with goals from Ria Mc Philibin and Roisin Hughes. Athenry replied with a well worked point but Mellows added two further points one from Ellen Burke and the other from Niamh Mc Peake. Alison Treacy and Ava Kelly were working extremely hard up and down the pitch but Athenry responded with two quick goals to leave the half time score Mellows 2-2 Athenry 2-1.
Mellows regrouped at half time and a couple of great goals at the start of the second half followed by a terrific save from Ciara O Sullivan ensured that it was going to be Mellows day with Mellows running out worthy winners on a score line Mellows 6-3 Athenry 2- 1. This was a real panel performance from the Mellows girls with the games played over 9 minutes a side with unlimited substitutions with every girl giving her all and playing to create space and overlaps for scores while working hard when they didn’t have the ball. The focus now returns to the U16 county championship with the next game against Oranmore Maree where a win would see them involved in the knockout stages.
